This Week on IbuaSpeaks we host Stephen Simiyu, popularly known as Biko Macoins Mashillingi founder of Slum Photography. Born in the capital city of Kenya he has been brought up in one of Nairobi’s slum areas.
At first his family stayed in Mathare, before relocating to Kibera where he resides to date. Biko has his share of experience with people reacting ignorantly to the fact that he is from the slums and even treat him suspiciously. He was then driven by the desire to change the stereotype that people have towards the slums and formed slum photography.
In 2014 Slum Photography was voted as The Influencer of The Year at The Social Media Awards Africa.
The Slum photography Exhibition dubbed #PigaPichaMtoiAsome was successfully held at the MJ centre in 2015. Most recently Slum photography was featured in Spain’s leading newspaper.
He will share on using photography as a tool for social change with our very own @laittara.
