While volunteering in homes and institutions of children with disabilities, Maria Omare empathized with the challenges faced by special needs children living in disadvantaged communities and her passion to improve their lives grew. She founded The action foundation in 2010 with a goal of transforming the lives of children with disabilities and empowering their caregivers through various projects.
The foundation is working to break barriers that prevent the inclusion of children and young people with disabilities in disadvantaged communities. They do this through provision of health services at a therapy and learning centre in Kibera and advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities.
Maria has numerous accolades, some of which include; 2013 Fellow at Akili Dada, 2013 Spark International Change maker, 2015 Global Good Fund(GGF) Finalist, 2015 Fellow of The Ford Motor Company International Fellowship of 92nd Street Y and many more.
